Harvard Honors Fischler School Professor as Distinguished Alumna
Professor Charlene Desir, Ed.D.
NSU Fischler School of Education and Human Services professor Charlene Desir, Ed.D., was recently selected by Harvard University to receive an Alumni Award at the school’s 2011 Alumni of Color Conference.
Each year, this award is given to recognize alumni who have led, taught, influenced, and inspired the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) community to do the work of seeking equity and justice.
Desir was nominated and selected because of her work with students in Haiti and Haitian-American students in the United States to better understand the experience of immigration and help educators better serve students. Desir’s work also models how to discuss student identities and lives both inside and outside schools with crucial nuance and complexity.
The awards ceremony will be March 5 during the Alumni of Color Conference at the Harvard Graduate School of Education in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Additionally, Desir was recently voted the 2011 Vice President of the Haitian Studies Association (HAS); and subsequently will become the President in 2012. HSA is a 22-year old academic organization supporting the research of Haitian issues in all disciplines.
