Halmos Students Participate in Climate Change and Florida’s Economy Round Table
On Monday, October 29 two Halmos College students participated in the Women’s March Broward Roundtable on Climate Change and Florida’s Economy. Environmental science major Megan Knights and marine biology major Mitchell Gilliland contributed to the event held at the Broward County Main Library. There were 10 other participants, including state and local candidates and youth voters. The event was streamed via Facebook Live. NSU’s College of Law professor Richard Grosso started the event with a presentation on the October 2018 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report.
The purpose of the event was two-fold. The first was to discuss the youth voters’ specific concerns regarding climate change, including its impact on Florida and its economy. The second was to ask candidates to elaborate on their plans and, if elected, how they will coordinate with each other to implement them.
Megan and Mitchell represented NSU’s Green Sharks. The “Green Sharks” student sustainability club’s purpose is to educate students, staff, and faculty about the meaning of sustainability and to advocate for sustainability actions on campus. Halmos College faculty member J. Matt Hoch, Ph.D. is co-advisor to the group.
