Halmos Student Conducts Research Project at California State University, Monterey Bay
This summer, Halmos College undergraduate chemistry major Emily Pope traveled to Monterey Bay, California to spend 10 weeks in the Monterey Bay Regional Ocean Science Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU). Emily worked with John Goeltz, Ph.D., an assistant professor at California State University, Monterey Bay. Dr. Goeltz research focuses on applications of electrochemistry in energy, food, the environment, biology, and marine science.
Emily’s research was titled, “Dependence of boric acid equilibria on hydroxide ions or hydrogen ions and its application to ocean acidification”. Emily said, “Participating in the REU program was an outstanding experience that gave me the opportunity to network with other researchers and learn more about the research currently being conducted in my field. In addition, I was able to learn new skills, conduct a research project on a topic in my field of study and give a formal presentation on my research at the conclusion of the program.” Emily’s REU was supervised by Halmos faculty member Dimitrios Giarikos, Ph.D.
