Halmos Hosts Flying Classroom Lionfish Seminar

Flying Classroom Sharkbyte

On March 29, 12 teachers from Miami-Dade County Public Schools spent part of their spring break at the Oceanographic Campus. There they worked with Halmos faculty member David Kerstetter, Ph.D. and two of his graduate students: Aaron Hasenei and Abby Ehlers. During their time at the OC, the teachers learned about invasive species theory, especially as it is applied to South Florida. They participated in lionfish dissections and visited the current lionfish research projects at the Guy Harvey Oceanographic Center building. The teachers also learned games and skills that could be later integrated with the State of Florida elementary and middle school learning standards for their students.

The program was organized by Flying Classroom and Captain Barrington Irving. The Flying Classroom is a K-8 integrative STEM+ supplemental curriculum. While Flying Classroom includes standards and principles aligned to STEM, it also includes activities correlated to geography, informational literacy, writing, art and social studies. Students work to develop critical thinking, collaboration, communication and creativity skills as they navigate through the expedition content. Each of the lessons within the Flying Classroom are based on the global expeditions of Captain Barrington Irving.
