Halmos Graduate Student Wins National Excellence Award in Research

Turner SharkbyteHalmos College Ph.D. candidate Nicholas Turner received the James D Watkins Student Award for Excellence in Research at the 6th annual Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill and Ecosystem Science (GoMOSES) Conference in New Orleans , Feb 5-8, 2018. His presentation was entitled, “Toxicity of oil to Americamysia bahia and deep-water column micronekton with comparisons to model predictions.”

The James D. Watkins Student Award for Excellence in Research is presented annually to exceptional student presentations at the conference. The Watkins Award strives to recognize outstanding research in order to cultivate the next generation of scientists and encourage excitement for presenting their work

Since its inception in 2013, the GoMOSES has sought to link fundamental research on the Gulf ecosystem to practical application. The 2018 theme, “Response, Restoration, and Resiliency in the Gulf,” continues this trend, exploring how fundamental science can help restore and maintain Gulf ecosystem integrity, inform response strategies, and strengthen resilience. This year’s program will also emphasize cross-cutting discussions among academics, industry, government agencies, and public interest organizations.
