Halmos Faculty Wins President’s Distinguished Professor of the Year

This week, Halmos College faculty professor Jose Lopez, Ph.D. was recognized as the 2017-2018 NSU Distinguished Professor of the Year at the Annual Faculty Reception. Dr. Lopez joined NSU in 2007. Since then he has been awarded over 14 extramurally funded research grants totaling over $2.1 million at NSU including from the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Justice, Department of the Army, Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative, and the American Genetics Foundation. He has been awarded multiple PFRDGs, most recently in 2018. He has authored 71 peer-reviewed publications and two solicited book chapters. He has a WO Patent 2,003,065,001 for Diterpene Cyclase and Methods of Use. He is called upon as a content expert reviewer for journals including the Journal of Heredity, Microbial Ecology, Nature Communications, and Scientific Reports.

Dr. Lopez has a solid publication record and has contributed a steady record of peer reviewed publications in a variety of high-ranking journals in his field including (but not limited to) the journals Coral Reefs, PeerJ, Journal of Endodontics, Marine Biology, Global Change Biology, Nature Scientific Reports, Microbial Biotechnology. He has more than 2,650 citations with nearly 1,100 since 2013. His work has been featured by the popular press including the PBS documentary Changing Seas and Time Magazine. Dr. Lopez is a leader in the field of sponge genomics and microbial genetics.  He provides strong service to professional organizations and to the field of research and higher education at large. He has collaborators from a variety of governmental and non-governmental institutions both nationally and internationally.
