Halmos College to Offer Free Chemistry, Physics Summer Camp for High School Students
The NSU Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography, in collaboration with the Constellation energy company, is offering a hands-on chemistry and physics summer camp for local high school students that focuses on finding energy solutions.
The free, two-week E2 Energy to Educate Summer Camp will accommodate up to 32 students (entering grades 10, 11, or 12 in fall 2016 at high schools in Broward, Palm Beach, and Miami-Dade counties) selected through a competitive process. The program is designed to inspire teenagers to think differently about energy and act as “energy solution ambassadors” when they return to school. Camp days will be divided between lectures and laboratory experiments.
Housed on NSU’s Fort Lauderdale/Davie campus, the day camp will be held Monday through Friday from June 20 through July 1, 2016 (9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.). The application deadline is May 31. A letter of recommendation from each student’s science teacher is required, and applicants should have completed basic chemistry and physics classes.
The E2 summer camp is hosted by the Halmos College and supported by a grant from Constellation. In addition to assistance from NSU students, four faculty members from the Halmos College are participating in the camp. They include Reza Razeghifard, Ph.D., associate professor; Dimitrios Giarikos, Ph.D., professor; Song Gao, Ph.D., associate professor; Victor Castro, Ph.D., associate professor; and Diego Castano, Ph.D., associate professor.
