Halmos College Students Partake in Cancer Center Collaboration

Undergraduate Keerthi Thallapureddy receiving her award.

This summer, two Halmos College students traveled to Houston, Texas where they attended the MD Anderson Cancer Center summer undergraduate research program. The biology majors: Keerthi Thallapureddy and Antonio Corral were chosen to spend 10 weeks at the Cancer Center with only 200 other students from across the country. Mentored by Halmos faculty member Aarti Raja, Ph.D., Keerthi worked in the Department of Radiation Physics, where she studied the effects of proton therapy in cancer. Antonio worked in the department of genetics using CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing to understand how cells respond to DNA damage.

At the end of the program, some students were asked to give an “elevator speech” to talk about their research project. Keerthi won that competition as well as the “People’s Choice Award”. The MD Anderson Summer Experience is a collection of programs that give students an opportunity to explore careers in basic research through working in labs with faculty mentors. Programs include lectures, panel discussions and professional development sessions designed to prepare students for research careers.
