Halmos College Students and Faculty Participate in Statewide Microbiology Meeting

Recently two undergraduate students, two graduate students, a post-doctoral student and three professors/researchers from NSU’s Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography (HCNSO), participated in the Florida Branch of the America Society for Microbiology meeting. The meeting was held Oct. 9-11 in Cocoa Beach, Florida.
This annual meeting gathers a smaller group at a local venue for the American Society for Microbiology, which can number in the tens of thousands. The meeting highlights student presentations and achievements, as well as invited keynote speakers in microbiology.
HCNSO master’s student Lauren O’Connell presented a poster called “Compositional Analysis of Port Everglades Inlet Microbiome using High Throughput DNA Sequencing Technology;” master’s student Renee Potens presented a poster entitled “Characterization of the Microbial Symbionts of the Marine Sponge Amphimedon compressa Using 16S rRNA Illumina Sequencing;” postdoctoral scientist Cole Easson, presented the oral paper “ Effects of Host Spatial and Genetic Variation on the Microbiome of the Sponge Cliona delitrix;” and Jose Lopez, Ph.D., HCNSO professor and researcher presented the poster “An Example of Microbiology Crowdfunding: The Skin Deep Microbiome Project.”
HCNSO undergraduate biology student Poorandai Shivbaran and associate professor Julie Torruellas Garcia, Ph.D., presented a poster titled “A Novel Assay to Screen Drugs That Target Bacterial Type III Secretion Systems;” and undergraduate biology student Nicholas Morgan and assistant professor Aarti Raja, Ph.D., presented a poster titled “A comparative analysis of soil microorganisms from select south Florida locations.”
