Halmos College Researchers Involved in Initiatives to Sequence Organisms of Earth

GIGA Group Sharkbyte

Last October, Halmos faculty member Jose Lopez, Ph.D., co-organized the third Global Invertebrate Genomics Alliance (GIGA III) workshop and conference held in Curacao. This conference included international scientists and over 100 . Included with these students were two of Halmos own: MS students Yvain Desplat and Victoria Pecci. GIGA’s mission is to train and support genomics research and education in bioinformatics and provides scholarships for students and postdoctoral scientists.

After attending GIGA III, Lopez traveld to London to attend the official launch of the Earth BioGenome Project (EBP). The EBP is a wider scale effort to sequence all wild genomes on the planet and is compared to a “moonshot” to propel biodiversity DNA sequencing. For more information about the new GIGA/EBP confederation, please go to https://www.earthbiogenome.org/communities-nodes/

Lopez also received funding from the National Science Foundation and the American Genetics Association for these projects.
