Halmos College Research Scientist wins 40 under 40 Award

This summer Halmos College Research Scientist Derek Burkholder, Ph.D. was awarded the South Florida Business Journal 40 Under 40 award. The 40 Under 40 Award recognizes young professionals in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties for outstanding success and contributions to their community. They were selected from hundreds of nominations and represent some the region’s most entrepreneurial and influential young leaders.

Burkholder, Ph.D., is the principal investigator for the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program, and a Research Scientist with the Guy Harvey Research Institute and Save Our Seas Shark Center. In addition he works with the Marine Environmental Education Center which allows students and the community to expand their understanding of sea turtles and coastal marine ecosystems.

Attending with the honoree at the South Florida Business Journal 40 Under 40 luncheon was NSU President George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D.; Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Ralph Rogers, Jr., Ph.D.; Halmos College Dean Richard Dodge, Ph.D.; Associate Director and Senior Writer, Joe Donzelli; and Halmos College Associate Dean Robin Sherman, Ph.D. The luncheon took place at Miami’s Parrot Jungle on August 4.
