Halmos College Research Paper Contributes to NOAA Shark Protection
On January 16, 2018, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration Fisheries has requested that fishermen voluntarily adopt shortfin mako shark measures. Research from the Halmos College Natural Sciences and Oceanography and its Guy Harvey Research Institute (GHRI) contributed to this major change in fishery management policy.
The GHRI research, published in the prestigious journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, used mako shark tracking data and modeling analysis to reveal that mako sharks (the same species as the NSU mascot) are being overfished and in need of urgent improved fishery management.
Halmos College faculty member Mahmood Shivji, Ph.D., who led the research team stated “This is a nice example of direct and rapid application of NSU ocean research to real world conservation outcomes”.
