Halmos College Promotes Space at Alvin Sherman Library Family S.T.E.M. Event
On the autumnal equinox (September 22, 2018), the Alvin Sherman Library blasted off a space-themed STEM program about the galaxy and planets in our solar system. Halmos college faculty and staff worked with the library to create hands-on activities. The event hosted over 100 children and approximately 50 adults.
Halmos faculty members Stefan Kautsch, Ph.D. and Bryan Armentrout, Ph.D. showed the public how the sun tracks directly east-west on the first day of fall. They also had a filtered telescope so people could look at the sun. Diego Castano, Ph.D. brought his rockets, Emily Schmitt-Lavin, Ph.D. used Spirograph’s for orbits and Jason Gershman, Ph.D. had the visitors calculate their age on other planets.
The public was welcomed into the event by a model of our solar system set up to scale by Halmos Director Melissa Dore, Ed.D.. They then had a space talk by NASA Ambassador Armando Rodriguez. This event was one of a monthly series of STEM events put on by the Alvin Sherman Library.
