Halmos College Hosts 5th Annual OSTEM Summer Camp

This past June, the Halmos College welcomed 24 students from South Broward High School’s Ocean STEM summer camp to the Oceanographic Campus. These students worked with Halmos faculty and graduate students on growing corals, mapping invasive species, and sea turtles. In addition to their time at the Oceanographic Campus, these students visited the Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus and the Marine Environmental Education Center to meet “Captain” and learn about sea turtles. The students met with faculty and staff at the Fort Lauderdale/Davie campus to learn about environmental sampling. They then visited the Alvin Sherman Library to learn how to use NSU’s marine science research databases.

The week culminated with a day-long shark tagging trip sponsored in part by the Marine Industries Association of South Florida. During this trip, the students captured, sampled, tagged, and released seven sharks, including a Hammerhead!

The OSTEM camp is an innovative summer program designed to allow students to explore marine career fields and do research investigations centered on marine and aquatic environments.
