Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography Masters of Science in marine biology candidates Erin Smith and Sarah Koerner, were each awarded $2,500 from the Gumbo Limbo Gordon J. Gilbert Research Grant. Located in Boca Raton, Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is a beacon for environmental education, research, and conservation. The Gumbo Limbo Gordon J. Gilbert Research Grant is part of that mission.

Ms. Smith’s research will focus on assessing potentially harmful heavy metal concentrations in seagrasses eaten by the Florida manatee in the heavily utilized vicinity of Port of Miami versus the protected waters of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Ms. Koerner’s research will focus on coral persistence through ocean warming and looking at the relationship of the reef building coral and its symbiotic relationship with a single-celled algae.
