Halmos College Faculty and Student Present Research at Microbiology Conference
Halmos faculty member Julie Torruellas Garica, Ph.D., and undergraduate biology student Samir Nacer attended the American Society for Microbiology Microbe Conference held in New Orleans, LA on June 1, 2017. There Garcia presented the novel method she developed to search for specific types of antibiotics produced by soil bacteria.
Mr. Nacer presented a poster based on his independent research conducted with Garcia. Planning on developing this research project into an honors thesis, Mr. Nacer considered attending the conference an “incredible experience”.
This research is part of NSU’s contribution to the Small World Initiative developed by Yale University. This innovative program encourages students to pursue careers in science while addressing a worldwide health threat—the diminishing supply of effective antibiotics. Addressing that challenge, students across the globe are conducting research to isolate bacteria from soil in their local environments. This could lead to the discovery of novel antibiotics, as more than two-thirds of antibiotics originate from soil bacteria or fungi. Students and faculty participating in the Small World Initiative gathered at the conference to connect, collaborate and share their ideas.
