Halmos Biology Students Present Research at Microbiology Conference
On October 13-15, 2017, three Halmos undergraduates went to the Florida Branch American Society for Microbiology (FLASM) Annual Meeting held in Clearwater, Florida. Accompanied by their faculty mentor, Julie Torruellas Garcia, Ph.D., junior biology and neuroscience double major Samir Nacer, sophomore biology major Miguel Portales Guemes, and junior biology and marine biology double major Michael McDonough attended the three-day meeting.
Samir, an honors student, won 1st place for his oral presentation entitled “Screening for Type III Secretion System Inhibitors”. Miguel presented a poster and 3-minute thesis entitled, “A Search for Type III Secretion System Inhibitors Produced by Soil Bacteria”. Michael was a co-author on Samir’s presentation. Dr. Torruellas Garcia is a branch officer for FLASM and helped organize the conference.
