Habana Deco: Art and Architecture of Cuba, Oct. 27
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, join us as we embark on a virtual tour of the art, architecture and culture of Havana Cuba, through images taken by Koskoff, on Thursday, October 27, 2016 at 7 pm in the Cotilla Gallery on the 2nd Floor of the NSU Alvin Sherman Library. The event, originally scheduled for October 5 was rescheduled due to Hurricane Matthew. This presentation is the first of a 5–part series taking place through April 2017, funded by the Florida Humanities Council, and is free and open to the public.
Compare our South Florida architecture and society to that of our closest neighbor, Cuba. Now more than ever, South Floridians have a strong connection to the Spanish-speaking island that awaits freedom and development. There are hundreds of Art Deco buildings in Cuba; however, they are destined for demolition as the infrastructure deteriorates. Architectural preservation is needed for a country so creative and rich in visual/performing arts and culture!
Mural Artist and designer Sharon Koskoff was born in Brooklyn, New York and has lived in Delray Beach, Florida since 1985. She graduated Brooklyn College as a Fine Arts Major, and New York School of Interior Design, where she mastered Color Theory. As a preservationist, she founded the Art Deco Society of the Palm Beaches (ADSPB) in 1987 and authored Art Deco of the Palm Beaches, Arcadia Publications in 2007. Presently, Koskoff is the chairperson for the Public Art Advisory Board of Delray Beach, an Art Instructor at the School of Creative Arts and the Group Tour leader at the Society of Four Arts in Palm Beach.
