Marine Hub1

This November, Guy Harvey, Ph.D. and Halmos College faculty members Tracey Sutton, Ph.D. and Mahmood Shivji, Ph.D. gave talks at the 58th annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. These presentations were part of the launch of South Florida’s new Marine Research Hub initiative. Dr. Harvey was the keynote speaker at a breakfast meeting.   Dr. Sutton gave NSU’s research presentation.  Later that week, both Drs. Harvey and Shivji gave a presentation on research at the Coral Reef Pavilion.

The Marine Research Hub organization consists of the eight founding partners: NSU, Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, University of Miami, Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance, Miami-Dade Beacon Council, the Business Development Board, and the Marine Industries Association of South Florida.    The purpose of the Hub is to brand and promote the South Florida region as a location of major marine research activities and capabilities that drives both increased knowledge as well as economic well-being.

Dr. Harvey is a noted marine wildlife artist and conservationist.  His keynote speech summed up the Marine Hub initiative. . “The real important aspect is to get everybody on the same page so that they’re not competing for research projects. There’s no duplicity … because there’s a lot of needed work to be done,” Harvey said.
