Great plants for your Dorm or Office
The benefits of indoor plants have been praised for years. Plants absorb harmful chemicals and toxins from the air while producing clean oxygen – purifying the air. Studies also show that they reduce stress and have positive impacts on overall health and well-being. Additionally, some plants offer even more benefits and are easy to grow on your desk or in your dorm room. Check out these plants to green up your indoor spaces.
Aloe Vera
The famous aloe plant is a medical mainstay for nearly every skin condition. Plus, it provides an attractive and exotic look for indoor spaces. Aloe Vera plants thrive with little sunlight and only a little water – perfect for a window sill. Breaking open the leaves of the plant releases a semi-gelatinous liquid that can be used to treat dry or irritated skin.
Mint
Not only does the mint plant provide a pleasant fragrance, but it’s edible too! When working on a stressful assignment, chew a mint leaf or two for a natural way to ease stress and nausea. It will also keep your breath fresh. Mint grows rather easily, but it does require plenty of sun and a well-drained pot to stay healthy.
African Violets
These make perfect decorations to brighten up any indoor space. They are small enough to fit just about anywhere, and they don’t require very much water. They are also especially good at removing air pollutants.
Snake Plant
The biggest plant on this list, the snake plant can grow to be 30 inches tall. However, they usually grow relative to the space you give them and are hardy indoor survivors. They can often go for a week or more without water and need very little sun. They’re also among the best plants for purifying air.
Cactus
The stalwart cactus is best known for its low maintenance. Although the amount of sun they require varies by species, most cacti can survive harsh conditions and go months without water. They are also cheap and easy to find at many nurseries. Cacti are also rumored to protect you from electromagnetic fields when placed next to a computer monitor – relieving headaches and tiredness associated with too much computer work. Supposedly, this is due to cacti surviving environments with harsh solar radiation (such as the desert). They make great plants for busy folks who want to get a little green indoors with little effort.
