Graduate Business Students Visit Historical and Financial Districts of New York City
A group of students from the Graduate Business Students Association (GBSA), the American Marketing Association (AMA), and the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM), along with the GBSA Faculty Advisor, Albert Williams, Ph.D., did an educational tour of New York City. To get a historical perspective, they visited the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. With the help of an excellent tour guide, Jared, they were able to get a good understanding of the historical immigration process that took place at Ellis Island.
They learned that the three main conditions for entry into the U.S. at that time included:
1) Were you healthy?
2) Did you know someone in the U.S.?
3) Did you have money (a minimum of $50)?
Jared gave them an excellent overview of the history of the Statue of Liberty, including that it was a gift from France. He also took them on a tour of the financial district and provided a wide range of information of its history. The students learned about the New York Stock Exchange, NASDAQ, and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Jared organized a fun and educational trading game for the students. While in Times Square, the students enjoyed the infamous hot dogs and pizza, and saw the magnificent city lights, including the big NASDAQ sign. This was an invaluable and enjoyable real world learning experience for these graduate business students.
