Presentation: “Some People Like to Be Beat”
This session will highlight the myths and realities of sexual assault and dating violence, both in general and specific to college-aged persons. Participants will engage in an interactive activity to identify the scope, extent, and forms of abuse. Topics such as why abuse occurs, why victims stay with and return to abusers, the impact of abuse, and help available. The session will demonstrate how everyone can get involved to end abuse and promote healthy relationships.
Presenter Biography: Laura Finley, Ph.D., is on the board of Women In Distress of Broward County, Inc. She is also a professor of sociology at Barry University. She has presented at numerous local, state, and national conferences on various issues related to social justice. She is coauthor of two books, has edited an encyclopedia, and has two books currently in production. Her work has also been published in a variety of academic journals and in book chapters.
