Governor Appoints Fischler Professor to Children’s Services Council of Broward County

Charlene Desir, Ed.D, a professor at NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler School of Education, was recently appointed by Gov. Rick Scott to the Children’s Services Council of Broward County. Desir will succeed Terry Santini-Oakes. Her term will commence on March 26 and end on Jan. 31, 2015.

Desir was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and migrated to Boston at a young age. She is a graduate of the historic Boston Latin School and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Tufts University. Desir completed her doctoral studies in education at Harvard University. Her dissertation is entitled, Lòt Bò Dlo: Across Waters: Haitian Students Search for Identity in U.S. Schools.

Desir’s academic interest is in the social adjustment of immigrant students in public schools. Her larger research interests include school’s social curriculum, social trauma occurring in schools, and how social issues affect cognitive ability. Desir has presented various papers on the topic of immigrant students and their adjustment to the U.S. She conducts research in the Caribbean addressing the importance of cultural identity retention.
