Fun History Facts

Did you know?

Men’s basketball was NSU’s first athletic program and began in the 1982-83 academic year. Nova University offered a contest to the general public looking for a nickname for the athletic program. “The Knights” were chosen until 2005, when the student body, faculty and staff collaborated to come up with a new nickname. The final choice was between “Stingrays” and “Sharks.”

Razor and cheerleadersThe overwhelming majority decided that NSU should become “The Sharks” and a new official mascot, Razor the Shark, was chosen by the Athletics department.

In keeping with the same nomenclature, the student newspaper, “The Knight” was later renamed “The Current,” and the “NSU Employee Newsletter” became “SharkBytes.”
