Fischler Student Raises Scholarship Dollars to Assist Those With Hearing Loss

Abraham S. Fishler School of Education student Rachel Friedman recently raised and donated $4075.00 to the Jack Mills Scholarship fund to assist those with hearing loss as her bat mitzvah (בת מצוה), signifying becoming a full-fledged member of the Jewish community with the responsibilities that come with it. Her project, coordinated through her local temple in Weston and through the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLA) was a noteworthy event for the NSU community, Rachel, her family, and her friends. Through the  Jack Mills Scholarship Fund, she has been able to assist individuals who need hearing aids but lack the ability to procure them due to financial difficulty.

Alison Friedman, Rachel’s mother and an alumna of NSU’s M.S. program in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) through the Fischler School of Education, learned ten years ago that her daughter had a congenital hearing loss. Applying her mastered SLP skills with her daughter, Rachel was fitted with hearing aids at NSU’s Audiology Clinic by Erica Friedland, AuD, department chair.

The circle of an NSU graduate, her daughter and her hearing loss is a special one. Rachel’s contribution and donation project is a major contribution to the scholarship fund.

Donations for the hearing impaired  through NSU’s Jack Mills Scholarship fund may be directed to Wren Newman, SLP.D., CCC-SLP, Executive Director, Speech Language and Communication Disorders, newmanw@nova.edu, or to the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association, http://asha.org/nsslha, an association of 13,000 members and 319 independently operated chapters located on college campuses and universities in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Greece, Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Congratulations and thank you to Rachel and Alison on behalf of those who will use the donated funds!
