Fischler School Hosts FACTE Fall 2010 Conference & Workshop

NSU’s Fischler School of Education and Human Services, in cooperation with the Orlando Student Educational Center directed by Cathy Anton, recently hosted the Florida Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (FACTE) Fall 2010 Conference and Preconference Workshop.

During the Oct. 27-29 conference, more than 120 of Florida’s deans, directors, and faculty members in the field of teacher education attended presentations made by nationally recognized speakers. The speakers included Peter McWalters, from the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), who spoke about the proposed standards of the CCSSO’s Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC).

Additional speakers included George Noell, a psychology professor from Louisiana State University, on Value Added Assessment of Teacher Preparation; and Jane West, Vice President for Policy, Programs and Professional Issues of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE), who spoke on updates in teacher education. Presentations were also made by staff members of the Florida Department of Education on the proposed Florida Educator Accomplished Practices Standards and the recently approved Race to the Top Grant; Florida DOE program review updates; and updates on the state certification tests.

Fischler School faculty members Melba Fletcher, James McCann, and Jan Yates also presented on recent developments pertaining to the school’s upcoming National Council on the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) review and the Undergraduate Teacher Education Program’s diversity simulation and Title V grant projects.  Special presenters also included two current elementary education interns, Laquel Coleman and Maria Moreno.
