Fischler School Honors Outstanding Educational Leaders & Students at 7th Annual Carrie P. Meek Awards
The Black Heritage Council of NSU’s Fischler School of Education and Human Services recently celebrated Black History Month with the Seventh Annual Carrie P. Meek Outstanding Education Leadership Achievement Award Ceremony.
The Feb. 24 event was a salute to exemplary community members who continuously and positively impact the lives of African-Americans in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties. It is held in honor of former Congresswoman Carrie P. Meek’s work as a lifelong educator and public servant, and draws hundreds of educators, government officials, and community leaders from the tri-county area each year.
This year’s keynote speaker was Salome Thomas-El, education contributor on The Dr. Oz Show, author of I Choose to Stay and The Immortality of Influence, and source on the Oprah Radio Network. Special guest speaker Dennis Bega, Senior Advisor in the U.S. Department of Education, joined Thomas-El to discuss ways of “Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders.”
The awards dinner included recognition of community leaders, and the presentation of the Outstanding Student Leadership Scholarships. These awards recognize elementary, middle, and high school students who have excelled in academics, extracurricular activities, and community or school leadership. Recipients included Jeremy Clayton of Suncoast Community High School and Daniela St. Gerard of North Miami Senior High School.
University School of NSU Upper School Athletic Director Roger Harriott then received the 2011 Outstanding Education Leadership Achievement Award, and Janus Wesley and Kendra Foster were each presented with a 2011 Black Heritage Council Scholarship.
