Fischler School awards Scholarship at “Dr. Carlo Rodriguez Champion of School Choice” Award Ceremony
The Dr. Carlo Rodriguez Champion of School Choice Award was recently presented to Julie Young, president/CEO and founder of the Florida Virtual School by the Florida State Board of Education’s Office of Independent Education and Parental Choice and the Florida Parental School Choice Consortium (FPSCC), in collaboration with NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler School of Education.
The award, named for the former Executive Director of the Florida Department of Education’s Office of Independent Education and Parental Choice, is presented annually, in memory of Rodriguez’s passion and commitment to improving access and equity in school choice for all children.
Julie Young exemplifies the tenets of the award through her effort to provide new and expanded school choice options for students in kindergarten through grade 12. Young created the Florida Virtual School program that has grown into the nation’s largest virtual school, setting standards for both virtual and traditional education programs for years to come. Since its inception in 1997, the once Florida-only, on-line high school now serves over 122,000 kindergartens through grade 12 students, throughout the 67 Florida school districts, 49 states, and 57 countries offering choice to students of all ages and all learning styles.
This award brings recognition to those who lead the charge for equitable school choice, for parents and students in the State of Florida and the nation. Additional information about the Florida School Choice Consortium is located at www.fpscc.net.
