Fischler Professor Named a Top Emerging Leader Under Age 40


Maryann Tobin, Ph.D.


Maryann Tobin, Ph.D., a Reading Education P\professor at NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler School of Education, has been recognized as an Emerging Leader by Phi Delta Kappa (PDK) International, a global association of education professionals.

The PDK Emerging Leader program distinguishes top educators under age 40 from around the world for their leadership. A committee made up of PDK’s past Emerging Leaders selected the 22 honorees for 2012-2013 from a competitive field of applicants, based on their outstanding professional accomplishments.

In addition to being honored at a November event in Washington, D.C., honorees will spend a day meeting with officials from the U.S. Department of Education.

Tobin joined the faculty of NSU in 2009, after completing a Ph.D. in Reading Education  from the University of Miami. She also holds a Master’s of Fine Arts in Motion Pictures Screenwriting from UM.

A former high school English teacher, Tobin has presented at conferences across the U.S. and Canada, training educators in reading, technology, and multimodal literacy instruction. Her research areas include digital storytelling, content area reading, and activity theory.

Tobin has also previously been an adjunct professor at the University of Miami and has been recognized for excellence as a high school language arts and media literacy teacher at both the secondary and college levels.

She is a member of PDK International, American Educational Research Association, International Reading Association, and National Council for Teachers of English.
