Final Winter Faculty Lecture to Feature Discussion of Former German Foreign Minister, Apr. 19

The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Faculty Lecture Series for the winter 2011 semester will conclude on Apr. 19 with a talk titled “Walther Rathenau’s Life and Death: A German Jewish Legacy.” Presented by Stephen Levitt, LL.M., associate professor in the college, the lecture will take place from 5 – 6 p.m. in the Alvin Sherman Library, second floor Gallery.

Levitt’s talk will explore the life of Walther Rathenau, a prominent businessman who became Foreign Minister of Germany during the Weimar Republic. Rathenau negotiated the Treaty of Rapallo with the Soviet Union, which brought Germany out of diplomatic isolation after the Treaty of Versailles. Despite rapprochement with the East for political advantage, Rathenau was decidedly pro-Western with many links to the American business community. A great German nationalist as well as a liberal, Rathenau commanded respect from both workers and the economic elites. He was, however, ambivalent about his Jewish heritage.

The Faculty Lecture Series are free and open to the public. For more information on the college’s Faculty Lecture Series, contact Jim Doan, Ph.D., professor in the college, at 954-262-8207.
