FCE Professor Trains Special Education Teachers in Taiwan
Hui Fang Huang “Angie” Su, Ed.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the Abraham S. Fischler College of Education trained special education teachers in Taiwan through the generous support of the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation Grant.
The training used the mathematics program (Project MIND – Math Is Not Difficult) created decades ago by Su to help children with autism through the use of mathematics. After the teachers received a weekend of training, they created materials and lesson plans to work with students with autism who were recruited from the South region of Taiwan. The students are in grades 1 – 2 and participated in the Project MIND activities and lessons for six consecutive weekends. The students and teachers all had a wonderful time participating in the project. The teachers requested that they continue to implement the strategies within their own classrooms and are currently doing so. The results of the intervention are still being compiled.
