FCE Graduate Wins $25k Milken Educator Award

Wendy Shirey, graduate of NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education (FCE)

Wendy Shirey, graduate of NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education (FCE), is the recipient of the $25,000 Milken Educator Award.

Shirey is currently the principal of Pinecrest Academy of Nevada – Horizon Campus in Henderson, Nevada. Under her leadership, Pinecrest Academy Horizon has been voted ‘Best Elementary School’ and ‘Best Charter School’ in the Las Vegas Review Journal’s annual poll, while enjoying substantial growth in math and english language arts programs.

Additionally, Wendy has fully engaged the faculty with new and creative approaches, where she hosts learning communities with each grade level, looking for proactive rather than reactive opportunities to adjust staffing and instructional methods. Shirey also has written grants totaling more than $3 million dollars which have been used to fund technology programs for the Pinecrest Charter System.

Milken Educators are selected in early to mid-career for what they have achieved and for the promise of what they will accomplish. In addition to the $25,000 unrestricted prize and public recognition, the honor includes membership in the National Milken Educator Network, a group of more than 2,700 top teachers, principals and specialists dedicated to strengthening education.

Wendy earned her Educational Specialist Degree with FCE in 2014.
