FCE Alum Named the 2017-2018 Principal of the Year by the School District of Palm Beach County

Sandra Edwards, Ed.S., graduate of NSU’s Fischler College of Education, has been named the 2017-2018 Principal of the Year by the School District of Palm Beach County.

Since 2012, Edwards has been the principal at Washington Elementary, a title I school located in Rivera Beach. In her first four years as principal, the state labeled the Riviera Beach school a C school, an A school, an A school again, and a D school. Then, in 2016, came an F–the first in the school’s history.

Edwards, a veteran administrator, jumped into action. She implemented a new system to reward students for good conduct, lower its number of referrals, and hired tutors in math and reading to assist the students and help them stay on task. She was rewarded with her hard work when the school grades were announced this past June. Washington Elementary jumped three full letter grades, going from an F to a B, making them one of just 12 F schools statewide to jump by three grades or more.

Edwards earned her Educational Specialist degree from the Fischler College of Education in 1988.
