Farquhar College Visiting Professor Publishes, Presents Co-Authored Work

Valerie Starratt, Ph.D., visiting professor in the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences, published her research in a scientific journal and gave four additional poster presentations at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP) Annual Conference held Feb. 5-7, 2009, in Tampa, Fla.

Starratt co-authored “Development and Initial Psychometric Assessment of the Rape Avoidance Inventory” and “Mate Value of Romantic Partners Predicts Men’s Partner-Directed Verbal Insults,” which was published in the February 2009 issue of Personality and Individual Differences. She also presented four research posters at the February SPSP conference. Starratt’s work includes research on male interest in female partners, mate retention rates and males’ perceived value of their mates, and the accuracy of male perceptions of partner infidelity.

By engaging in research, Starratt broadens her perspective as a professor and develops new theories and methodologies that she can pass along to students. Starratt utilizes her expertise and scholarship in the area of sex and relationships to provide her students with a variety of interesting examples in the classroom.
