Featured Undergraduate Courses in Winter 2015
College is the opportune time to not only focus on your academic interests and goals, but to also explore new topics and disciplines. To that end, the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences is highlighting a diverse selection of courses that can help broaden your scope of study at NSU.
These undergraduate courses are open to students of various majors; most do not require upper-level prerequisites; and many help fulfill requirements for the General Education Program, a minor, or elective credit. Consider registering for one of these courses for Winter 2015. You might just uncover a new passion!
ARTS 3020 Women in the Arts Learn about significant contributions of women in art, music, theatre, and dance. Explore the differences between art produced by male and female artists, and how female artists respond to historical and cultural events in their work. (3 credits, prerequisites: One ARTS course, and COMP 2000, COMP 2010, COMP 2020, or COMP 2000H)
EXSC 3740 Exercise Physiology with Lab Learn how to measure and analyze the body’s cardiopulmonary, neuromuscular, and musculoskeletal systems. Study the integration of these systems at the chemical, cell, and organismal levels. (4 credits, prerequisite: BIOL 3312 or BIOL 3320)
FILM 2000 Introduction to Film Who doesn’t love a great movie? Understand even more about film as an art form by learning how to consider films in terms of genre, style, social elements, and much more. (3 credits, prerequisite: COMP 1500 or COMP 1500H)
GEOG 2075 Geographical Information Systems Ever wondered how modern maps are made? This course will help you visualize, question, and understand geographic data, which is utilized by organizations in almost every industry. Analyzing this data can reveal or predict trends and relationships, such as patterns of crime, environmental degradation, and customer location and behavior. (3 credits)
MUSC 2700 Musical Theatre Performance I Sing, act, and dance in a fun, relaxed environment. Learn about America’s greatest invention – the Musical Theatre! (2 credits)
POLS 2300 International Relations What’s the World coming to? Take this course to learn about the major issues in contemporary international politics. (3 credits, prerequisite: COMP 1500 or COMP 1500H)
PSYC 3180 Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination Stereotypes and prejudice operate largely outside of the awareness of the prejudiced individual, but they substantially impact most human interactions, from small talk with strangers, to the way we are viewed by our co-workers, to the way we raise our children. What can science reveal about the extent to which prejudice influences us all? What can be done to overcome its negative effects? (3 credits, prerequisite: PSYC 1020 or 1020H)
SOCL 4010 LGBT Cultures Examine topics in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender cultures from theoretical, historical, and political perspectives. This course also includes guest speakers from community organizations. (3 credits, prerequisite: SOCL 1020)
