Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Faculty Judge Local Math Competition
Six faculty members from the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences volunteered at a regional Florida Association of Mu Alpha Theta (FAMAT) mathematics competition for local middle and high school students on Feb. 1.
The faculty served as Dispute Center Judges, evaluating the merit of disputed solutions that differed from those provided in the official FAMAT answer key. The competition was hosted by Ferguson High School in Miami and the school’s Mu Alpha Theta club sponsor, Teresita Lemus, Ed.D., an adjunct professor at the college who teaches at NSU’s Kendall campus.
Serving as judges from the college were Emilola Abayomi, Ph.D., assistant professor; Ricardo Carrera, Ph.D., associate professor; Jason Gershman, Ph.D., associate professor and coordinator of mathematics; Jeffrey Lyons, Ph.D., assistant professor; Shahla Nasserasr, Ph.D., assistant professor; and Iuliana Stanculescu, Ph.D., associate professor.
More than 1,500 students from 52 South Florida schools competed in the event, which featured math problems in six categories, such as calculus and statistics. For the second consecutive year, students from American Heritage School in Plantation emerged victorious.
