Kevin Dvorak, Ph.D., associate professor and coordinator of the writing center at the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, gave the keynote talk at the 2014 Northern California Writing Centers Association Conference at Sonoma State University on Apr. 5.

In his talk, titled “The Art of Writing Center Work: Drawing on and Playing to Our Strengths,” Dvorak discussed ways in which writing centers can use leadership theories, creative/non-traditional pedagogies, and even play to help tutors and students develop authority and authorship. More than 150 writing-center professionals and tutors from California, Nevada, and Washington attended the conference.

Dvorak, who serves as president of the International Writing Centers Association, also gave an invited presentation at the Community School of Naples as part of CSN’s “Writers Week” this past February.

At NSU, Dvorak leads the college’s Writing Fellows program, which provides course-based writing assistance to students enrolled in first-year composition and undergraduate writing classes across the curriculum. Dvorak also earned the Professor of the Year award at NSU’s 2014 Student Life Achievement Awards (STUEYS) in April.
