Farquhar College Celebrates Students’ Completion of Clinic Exploration Program

The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences hosted an end-of-the-year celebration on April 21, 2009, to honor the students who participated in the college’s Clinic Exploration Program (CEP) during the 2008–2009 academic year.
The CEP pairs students with health professionals so they can personally experience a broad range of medical and therapeutic fields. Students acquire valuable practical knowledge by shadowing professionals at work in many of NSU’s clinics. Working side-by-side with seasoned health professionals, students gain a first-hand perspective into possible career options. The program organizes rotations with doctors, optometrists, audiologists, physical therapists, dentists, certified athletic trainers, and other professionals.
Don Rosenblum, Ph.D., dean of the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, opened the ceremony by welcoming the students, faculty, and administrators in attendance. Fred Lippman, R.Ph., Ed.D., chancellor of NSU’s Health Professions Division, then spoke about the vital program and discussed the opportunities available to students in HPD. Following Lippman, Robert S. Oller, D.O., chief executive officer for NSU clinical operations, talked about the future of health professions and the benefits of the Clinic Exploration Program.
Each CEP student in attendance then received certificates of completion, which were distributed by Robin L. Sherman, Ph.D., the program adviser and associate professor and associate director in the college’s Division of Math, Science, and Technology. A reception followed.
Sixty-nine undergraduate students participated in the college’s Clinic Exploration Program this year. Combined, the students completed 124 rotations and spent 744 hours in NSU clinics. The students officially began their CEP experience upon receiving their blue medical jackets after completing certified training in Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
Since the fall 2006 launch of the CEP, 266 students have participated. There are 33 program applicants for fall 2009.
