Welcome New Faculty Members!
The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences welcomes 11 new faculty members this fall. Each brings to NSU noteworthy academic experience, both inside and outside of the classroom, in a variety of fields and interests. Over the past two weeks, the names and biographies of eight of these faculty members have been shared in SharkBytes.
This week, the college introduces the remaining three (in alphabetical order):
Jose Diaz-Alban, Ph.D., visiting professor, Division of Math, Science, and Technology
Diaz-Alban received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from New York University’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences in 2008. He has spent the past year as an adjunct instructor of mathematics at NYU, where he has taught a variety of introductory and advanced mathematics courses to undergraduate and graduate students. Diaz-Alban’s graduate coursework prepared him to teach all mathematics courses. In addition to his academic qualifications, he has prior teaching experience, which only serves to improve and enhance his current teaching duties. Diaz-Alban also has prepared a number of research manuscripts on the asymptotic analysis of acoustic waves.
Louisa Rogers, Ph.D., visiting professor, Division of Humanities
Rogers received her M.A. in English from Hunter College and her Ph.D. in English Education from Rutgers University, where she studied with Janet Emig. Her dissertation was the first case-study research on the composing process of college freshmen writers. For the past 20 years, she has been an educational consultant and teacher trainer for the Florida Department of Education, various school districts, and numerous publishers. Most recently, Rogers authored The Writing Module for a Web-based English as a Second Language (ESL) program and has been an adjunct professor with the Division of Humanities for the past year.
Aya Shigeto, Ph.D., assistant professor, Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences
Shigeto received her doctoral degree in developmental psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. As a graduate student, Shigeto received recognition for her teaching excellence, authored several peer-reviewed articles, and presented regularly at professional conferences. Her research interests focus on parent-child interaction patterns and their influence on child behavior and development.
The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences at NSU provides outstanding programs of study in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, performing and visual arts, information technology, and biological, environmental, and physical sciences that enhance critical thinking, effective communication, and lifelong learning. New faculty members play a vital role in advancing the college’s mission to prepare students for graduate and professional study, career development, and responsible citizenship.
