Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Students Teach Science to Local Kids

On Oct. 18, eight students from NSU’s Pre-Medical Society and Chemistry Club volunteered their time to teach science to children from the Boys and Girls Club in Carver Ranches. The students taught two lessons and conducted hands-on experiments with 25 participants, ages 11 and 12.

“This was an extremely valuable experience,” said Pradeep Vanguri, Ph.D., ATC, assistant professor in the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, who serves on the board of the Boys and Girls Club of Broward County. “The kids, NSU students, and Carver Ranches board members look forward to our continued relationship. Some of the kids wanted to know if we would be coming back every week.”

The event and experiments were organized largely by biology majors Corynne Dignan, secretary of the Pre-Medical Society, and Dean Kalam, president of the Chemistry Club. Also helping coordinate the event were the organization’s faculty advisers: Mark Jaffe, D.P.M., associate professor, and Beatrix Aukszi, Ph.D., assistant professor, both from the college.
