Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Inducts more than 80 Students into Biological Honor Society
The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences inducted more than 80 students into Beta Beta Beta (Tri-Beta), the national biology honor society, during a ceremony and reception at NSU on Apr. 14. This is the ninth year the college has inducted students into Tri-Beta at NSU.
The Tri-Beta honor society seeks to encourage scholarly attainment in the field of biology by reserving its regular membership for those students who achieve high academic records. It emphasizes a three-fold program, which includes stimulation of scholarship, biological dissemination of scientific knowledge, and the promotion of research.

The ceremony included opening statements from Aurelien Tartar, Ph.D., Tri-Beta faculty adviser and assistant professor in the college, and Matthew He, Ph.D., director of the college’s Division of Math, Science, and Technology. The event continued with a keynote talk by Emily Schmitt, Ph.D., associate professor and coordinator of biological sciences in the college, who served as president of her Tri-Beta chapter in college.
The new members were then inducted by current Tri-Beta president, Stephanie Luff, and vice president, Yusra Quadri. Of the students inducted, 81 became regular members and four became associate members. Inductees eligible for regular membership have completed at least 45 credits, at least three upper-level courses in biology, and have at least a 3.2 GPA overall. Associate members are freshmen who are on track to become regular members of Tri-Beta.
Joining the students in celebration of their achievements were various friends and family members, as well as faculty members from the college, including Don Rosenblum, Ph.D., dean; Naomi D’Alessio, Ph.D., associate dean; Robin Sherman, Ph.D., associate professor and associate director of the college’s Division of Math, Science, and Technology; and Joshua Loomis, Ph.D., assistant professor.
