Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Celebrates National Day on Writing

Students passing through the Don Taft University Center on Oct. 20 were invited to share the last five words they wrote.

Have you ever thought about your everyday writing? On Oct. 20, NSU students were asked to do just that as the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Division of Humanities celebrated the National Day on Writing.

In honor of the day, Kelly Concannon Mannise, Ph.D., and Star Medzerian, Ph.D., assistant professors in the college, spread out large, blank posters in front of the Flight Deck and invited passersby to write down the last five words they wrote. No words were left unwritten, with texts and social-networking-site status updates also counting as contributions. About 200 students stopped by to share their words during the two-hour event.

Medzerian and Concannon Mannise said they organized the event to promote the role of writing in students’ lives, and asked students to reflect on the writing they do in and outside of the classroom.

The National Council of Teachers of English established Oct. 20 as the annual National Day on Writing in order to recognize the importance and prevalence of the written word.
