Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Faculty Member Premieres Dance Production in Miami

Augusto Soledade, M.F.A., assistant professor in the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, recently premiered his latest dance production, Cordel, at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center (SMDCAC). In addition to teaching a variety of dance courses at the college, Soledade also serves as the artistic director of the Brazz Dance Theater, which presented Cordel. Performances took place on select days, Nov. 11–20.

Through dance, Cordel reflects on the history and social implications of three art forms: Argentine tango, American hip-hop, and Brazil’s Cordel literature. Soledade created the production during a month-long residency at SMDCAC, which co-commissioned the work with the Florida Dance Association and the Alabama Dance Council.

Since 2005, Soledade has received six fellowships including the 2008 Guggenheim Fellowship in Choreography, as well as multiple grants to develop choreographic- and research-based projects. This past Fall, he received a grant from the National Performance Network (NPN) Creation Fund, which supported the creation of Cordel. On November 15, Soledade led a free master class in Afro-Brazilian dance for members of the NSU community.
