Faculty Symposium: Sexual Harassment Beyond the Headlines, March 15
The Faculty Symposium will be held on March 15 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. in the Faculty Shark Club (Rosenthal Building).
The #MeToo movement has shined a spotlight on the prevalence of sexual harassment in our society. But, media coverage fails to address many of the multilayered issues surrounding the causes of, and potential responses to, harassment. Questions remain regarding why some members of our society continue to experience sexual harassment, along with concerns about
society’s and the law’s failure to effectively address this pervasive problem and its underpinnings. This symposium will address gender dynamics, workplace norms, organizational structure, societal values, and the body of law regarding sexual harassment.
Presenters
Kathleen Waites, Ph.D., is a full professor of English and Gender Studies in the Department of Literature and Modern Languages in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Cofounder of the Women’s/Gender Studies minor and NSU’s chapter of the American Association of University Women, she teaches a range of literature and women’s and gender studies classes, including the honors class in feminism, “The ‘F’ Word: Feminism and Culture.” Her scholarly work focuses on the representation of gender in popular culture and the media, and has appeared in a variety of journals and edited texts. Because of Waites’ expertise in women’s history and sex and gender-related issues, she has been a featured speaker at a variety of community events and for women’s organizations. She regularly presents at national and regional conferences, and her published work has appeared in the journals Film/ Literature Quarterly, Auto/Biography, The Journal of Popular Culture, Biography: An Interdisciplinary Quarterly, and in Routledge’s Chick Flicks: Contemporary Women at the Movies. In 2006, Waites published her memoir, Particular Friendships: A Convent Memoir.
Kathryn Webber Nuñez, J.D., is a professor of law at the Shepard Broad College of Law, where she teaches, among other subjects, Employment Discrimination and Workers’ Compensation. Nuñez also teaches several courses in the Master of Employment Law program. Her scholarship focuses on judicial decision-making in employment law cases and prospects for reforming antidiscrimination law. Her latest article Toxic Cultures Require a Stronger Cure: The Lessons of Fox News for Reforming Sexual Harassment Law, 122 Penn St. L. Rev. (forthcoming 2017) explores how current law fails to prevent harassing cultures and what alternative legal methods can be used to do so. Nuñez has published in multiple journals, including the Columbia Journal of Gender and the Law and the University of Southern California Interdisciplinary Law Journal. Prior to entering academia, she enjoyed a 10-year career as an employment litigator in New York City, and she was a partner at a boutique employment law firm that represents plaintiffs in high-profile discrimination lawsuits.
