Faculty Symposium – Adults with Disabilities: Access, Opportunities, and Challenges, March 16
The Faculty Symposium is scheduled for Thursday, March 16, 2017 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. in the Faculty Shark Club (Rosenthal Building).
The One Hundred First Congress of the United States of America, in 1990, enacted the Americans with Disabilities Act “to provide a clear and comprehensive national mandate for the elimination of discrimination against individuals with disabilities.” This civil rights law is intended to prevent discrimination against individuals with disabilities in areas of public life—including employment, public services, public accommodations, and telecommunications. In this symposium, the presenters will discuss the rights of adults with disabilities in higher education and the workplace. They will explore why commonly available accommodations that have increased access to postsecondary education have not necessarily translated into increased vocational opportunities for adults with disabilities.
Presenters
Michael Masinter, J.D., has been a professor of law at Nova Southeastern University’s Shepard Broad College of Law since 1978, with a particular interest in employment discrimination law and disability rights law. He received his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1973 after graduating from Stanford University in 1968. Masinter has been a member of The Florida Bar since 1973, a Legal Panel member for the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida, a cooperating attorney in pro bono litigation on behalf of the ACLU for more than 20 20 years, and a regular contributor to Disability Compliance For Higher Education.
Charles Golden, Ph.D., has been a professor of psychology specializing in neuropsychology at Nova Southeastern University since 1994. He served as a member of the professional group that outlined guidelines for handling disability requests in high-stakes tests in a landmark suit brought by the Department of Justice against the Law School Admission Council. Golden has made it his mission to help disabled individuals get accommodations in work and school settings. He has a long list of publications in the field of neuropsychology on his resumé.
