Faculty Research Endeavors to be Recognized at NSU’s Quality of Life Council Meeting, Feb. 7

NSU faculty will present their research projects on Feb. 7 at the NSU Quality of Life Council Meeting, which is to be held in the Alvin Sherman Library, Room 3018, 8:30- 11:00 am.

Among the presenters, Elda Kanzki-Veloso, Ph.D., program professor at the Abraham S. Fischler School of Education and Angela Yehl, Psy.D., of the Institute for the Study of Human Service, Health, and Justice will present their research project, “A Mixed-Methods Study on Returning Veterans Experiencing a Holistic Therapeutic Program.”  This study is the result of a partnership between NSU and the Broward County Elderly and Veterans Services Division, Fort Lauderdale Vet Center and Veterans of Foreign Wars Stone of Hope Project. These partnerships seek to improve the quality of life for returning veterans and their families by investigating “holistic” treatment strategies that involve community collaboration and case management, in addition to best practice treatments in order to address mental health and relational difficulties. The current study uses a mixed-methods approach to assess veterans’ experience of a holistic treatment program.

In addition, William Dorfman, Ph.D., professor of Psychology and associate director of Clinical Training in the Center for Psychological Studies, along with Jessica Aleman, Christopher Gioia, Monique Beckford, and Mani Brar of the Center for Psychological Studies will present their research project, “Using Psychoeducation and Group Therapy to Enhance Quality of Life among a Severe and Persistent Mentally Ill Population.” Notably, this project involves a joint partnership between NSU and Henderson Mental Health Center’s Crisis Stabilization Unit. Although psychoeducation and group therapy have been shown to improve patients’ outcomes in inpatient treatment settings, effective means of implementing these treatment components are deficient with indigent and severe and persistent mentally ill populations. The purpose of the current study is to determine whether psychoeducation, delivered in the form of a handbook, leads to change in patients’ quality of life during treatment.

All NSU faculty, staff and students are welcome to attend!  Please RSVP to Angela Yehl, Psy.D., at 954-262-8299 or yehl@nova.edu by Feb. 3.
