Faculty Lecture Series to Examine the Role of Identity in the Documemoir Stories We Tell
The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Faculty Lecture Series will host a discussion of the inventive meta-documemoir by Sarah Polley in which the actress-filmmaker weaves together the complex tapestry of her own life story.
“Sarah Polley’s Documemoir Stories We Tell: The Refracted Subject”
Faculty Lecture Series | Kate Waites, Ph.D., professor
Thursday, February 12, 2015
Noon–1:00 p.m.
Alvin Sherman Library | Room 4009
About the Talk
The lecture will explore Sarah Polley’s film investigating her decreased mother’s secret life through the lens of artifacts and interview with others. By employing postmodern stylistics––Super-8 home footage combined with faux home footage and interspersed with photographs, emails, and a narrative within a narrative––Polley arrives at some conclusions about her muddled parentage and its impact on her own constructed identity.
This event is free and all are welcome to attend. For more information, contact James Doan, Ph.D., professor, at (954) 262-8207.
