Further Exploration of Matrices: Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Professor Publishes New Edition of Math Book

Fuzhen Zhang, Ph.D., professor in the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, has published the second edition of his book Matrix Theory: Basic Results and Techniques (Universitext). The updated edition, published on Aug. 31, comes a decade after Zhang released the first.

“This is the revised, expanded edition,” Zhang writes in the preface of the new release. “My goal has remained the same: to provide a text for a second course in matrix theory and linear algebra accessible to advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students.”

The updated book includes more than 1,000 exercise problems covering a variety of topics. Zhang completed the book during a sabbatical, which was supported by the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences.

Zhang has spent more than 20 years teaching, researching, and writing about various subjects in math. In 2009, he released the second edition of another textbook, Linear Algebra: Challenging Problems for Students (The Johns Hopkins University Press), designed to aid students in their success with linear algebra courses, a common prerequisite for collegiate math majors. He also edited a research book, The Schur Complement and Its Applications (Springer), published in 2005.

At NSU, Zhang teaches courses in algebra, trigonometry, calculus, and statistics, which are offered by the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Division of Math, Science, and Technology.
