E.S.C.A.P.E. Summer Camp’s 1st Session Ends with Awards

A fun time was had by all. Pictured are E.S.C.A.P.E. campers and IIFE staff after presentations and awards ceremony.

The H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship’s International Institute for Franchise Education (IIFE) recently completed the first session of this summer’s E.S.C.A.P.E program. E.S.C.A.P.E. — the Entrepreneurship Summer Camp and Personal Enrichment program — is open to high school students grades 9-12 who have a passion for business and is designed to give them an understanding of the process of starting a business and maintaining ethical business practices.

The camp educates and inspires young entrepreneurs by introducing them to important business concepts such as business plan formulation, management, marketing, financial oversight, leadership and business etiquette, all in a fun and highly interactive educational environment.

Campers come to the camp with a business concept and business plan and then work on it during the week with assistance and feedback from instructors and lecturers. All fourteen local high school students attending the summer’s first session concluded the week of activities by presenting their business plans to a panel of judges comprised of local business leaders and entrepreneurs. Campers recognized for their business proposals and presentations included:

  • Best Overall Business Plan: Sierra Mari Jamir, Andover, MA; 10th grade, Phillips Academy Andover;   Pinoy Jamir Education Exchange Program, an educational exchange service.
  • Most Unique Business Idea: Jake Pistiner, Davie, FL; 11th grade, Western High School;  www.drumbids.com, an online merchandise auction bidding site.
  • Best Presentation: Clint Ferguson, Boynton Beach, FL; 12th grade, Atlantic Community High School; Ferg Freeze, a frozen refreshment vendor.
  • Best Content: Karla Jimenez, Davie, FL; 12th grade, Western High School; Dreams Restaurant, an interactive dining experience.

Also attending the summer’s first session was André Samuels of Tamarac, FL, and a 12th grader at Nova High School.  André won one of three camp scholarships awarded this summer. Winners were chosen on the strength of their business proposal and were selected by a panel of judges consisting of local business leaders, with scholarships provided by local and national businesses. André was selected for his proposal on his business concept Immortalize The Moments, a photography/videography service.

IIFE’s second E.S.C.A.P.E. session runs July 18 – 22, 2011. For more information and to register, contact Janet Goldstein at 954.262.5139 or goldjan@huizenga.nova.edu.
