Enjoy Red, White, and Blue (Foods!) this July

Lucky for us, as we enjoy the 4th of July and the longer days of summer, the colors we typically associate with the holiday share their pigments with some of the most nutritious and low calorie produce.
Red: Strawberries, Watermelon, Tomatoes, Sweet Peppers, Cherries and Raspberries
Nutrients: Anthocyanins, Antioxidants, Flavanols, Lycopene, Polyphenols, Potassium, and Vitamin C
Benefits: Strengthens the immune system, reduces free radical damage and inflammation in the body. New research shows that these anti-inflammatory foods may help to reduce recovery time from exercise by reducing soreness.
White: Garlic, Onions
Nutrients: Potassium, Quercetin, Sulfur
Benefits: Both anti-inflammatory and immune strengthening. These members of the Allium family contain high concentrations of sulfur which are important in the detoxification pathways of the body. Some studies also show reduced blood pressure and cholesterol levels with regular consumption.
Blue/Purple: Blueberries, Grapes, Eggplant
Nutrients: Anthocyanins, Antioxidants, Resveratrol, Potassium
Did you know that certain breeds of Blueberries can be grown in Central and Northern Florida?
Benefits: Reduces inflammation and may improve markers of cardiovascular health.
So – there you have it! While planning your holiday fare include some red, white, and blue! Start the day with strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries in your yogurt; snack on dried tart cherries or fresh red or purple grapes; and finally finish the day with a blend of sautéed garlic and onions to top off your burger.
